Some returning Burchfield favorites......

Terry Mangan is back at the Burchfield instructing our new Tuesday Night Painting Series.  Her popular 4 week Watercolor Class will return in May, but first up, in April, she will be teaching our new Introduction to Painting Class to introduce new students to the world of painting and in June she will be teaching our Studio in Acrylics Class.

 
Ms. Mangan is a WNY artist who regularly shows her acrylics, oils, watercolors and pastels in art shows and exhibits in the area.

Her workshops are suitable for beginners and continuing students who are interested in learning the fundamentals of painting technique, composition and design.

Andrea Oswald is also back at our Center teaching our ever popular Wine, Women & Art. This 2 evening workshop will take place on April 16th & 23rd featuring 2 different projects, Painted Daisy Wine Glasses and Traveler's Boxes.  You need only bring yourself and perhaps a friend as all materials for the class will be supplied along with refreshments...and of course the wine!

  
After a successful exhibit here at our Center last year, Sandra Clisham Bartz joins our evergrowing resume of talented artists as she begins our 2008 Season with Introduction to Drawing beginning on April 3rd.  Her class will introduce basic drawing techniques including shading, perspective & the elements of drawing.  Welcome aboard Sandra!

In May: 'Gardening 101' w/ Sally Cunningham

 Sally Cunningham is the author of Great Garden Companions (Rodale Books), and has written chapters in many other gardening books, including Projects for a Birders’ Garden (2006) and Now, That’s Ingenious! (Yankee Books). She has lectured throughout 14 states, from Maine to most recently Alaska, and has been featured on an HGTV organic gardening special (DIY network, “Dirt on Gardening”, about companions in the garden.)  Sally's column appears on Fridays in the Buffalo News. She has a TV segment on Channel 4 on Sunday mornings (about 8:20AM), and a new radio show: Green Space with Sally Cunningham, WKBW Radio (1520 AM) on Sunday mornings, 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  Sally was a Cornell Cooperative Extension educator for 13 years and managed the Master Gardener program.  Currently she is at work on Tackling Trouble—a Guide for Pest Management for Home and Garden, for Cornell University. She is also a consultant and teaches gardening classes at Lockwood's Greenhouses in Hamburg, New York—and now at Burchfield Nature Center. 


In June: 'All About Herbs' w/ Maria Weber

Maria Weber is a registered dietitian with in-depth knowledge as to cooking with herbs as well as using herbs for medicinal/health purposes. This seminar will give the participant an understanding of herbs from history and folklore to practical uses, including for medicinal purposes. It will include cooking and class demos to teach participants to cook with herbs, fresh and dried, how to dry and store herbs, how to make herbal teas, and make their own herbal craft/gift. 



In the fine tradition of Charles E. Burchfield, in addition to our Introduction and Studio Art Classes, we are pleased to offer our new Signature Art Classes. As Mr. Burchfield once did on these very grounds, so you now too have the opportunity to be inspired by nature while creating beautiful works of art.  We are pleased to welcome Mary McAndrew, Kathy McDonnell & Michael Rakoczy to our family of Art Instructors as they introduce our Nature Sketching & Journaling & Landscape Oil Painting, Landscape Pastel Painting, and Figurative Sculpture, respectively, to our Center. 

 

Mary McAndrew, an internationally known painter and illustrator of realistic birds, trees and plein air landscapes, but also realistic fantasy paintings that use nature as the theme. Inspired by nature, mythology and being a Reiki Master herself; her Goddesses are always surrounded by a natural world with hidden symbols and meanings. She teaches Nature Sketching classes and workshops at parks and nature centers all over WNY!

Kathleen McDonnell is a signature member of the Pastel Painters of Cape Cod and the Pastel Society of the West Coast. She is a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, Niagara Frontier Plein Air Painters, Buffalo Niagara Art Association, and the Centennial Art Society. She has received local and national awards including the Award of Distinction from the Midwest Pastel Society, Merit Awards from the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, Scholarship Award from the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and the B&V Griffuni Purchase Award from the Pastel Society of America. With a B.S. and a M.S. from State University College at Buffalo she continued her education and acquired some post graduate hours. Kathleen has attended workshops with Pastel Artists Doug Dawson, Albert Handell, Anita Louise West, Anna Contes, Ben Konis, and Elizabeth Mowry.

Beginning April 12th....

Saturday Mornings have been designed to offer busy members of our community the chance to come and relax as a start to their weekend.  When the weather permits, classes will be held outside amongst the natural beauty of the park.
