Landscape Pastel Painting

Class Description:

 

Class 1: Introductions. The qualities of soft and hard pastels, arranging your palette, and indexing your pastels will be covered. Paper surfaces and texture, toning papers, and colored papers will be introduced. Blending tools, charcoal, turpenoid, fixatives as well as the advantages of dry mounting your paper will be covered. Preparation for painting and mounting your paper to foam core before you begin painting as well as all of the above are some of the concepts that will be demonstrated in this first class.

 

Class 2: Painting from personal photographs. Finding your point of interest and your personal message will be discussed.  Safety issues with pastel. The importance of a value sketch, a small palette, and choosing your colors. Students will begin work on their chosen idea. Individual help at the easel.

 

Class 3: Review of information. Atmospheric perspective and the importance of the sky as part of the background. Framing your pastel as well as presentation. Information on Pastel Societies.

 

Class 4: Plein Air Pastel. Demonstration on the grounds of the Burchfield on plein air pastel. Review of student work. Individual help for students who need assistance.

 

Supplies needed: 

 

Wallis sanded paper 

Soft and/or hard pastels (Nu-Pastel, Rembrandt etc.)

1 -2” masking tape

#2B drawing pencils

Foam core or any other support
